(Washington, DC – December 3, 2021) The Coalition of Airline Pilots Associations (CAPA) applauds the U.S. Senate’s confirmation of Captain Chesley B. “Sully” Sullenberger to serve as Ambassador to the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).
“I can think of no better choice to fill this crucial global safety position,” stated CAPA President Captain Larry Rooney. “Captain Sullenberger’s significant safety and airline operational background will provide a real-world, hands-on perspective to the vital work ICAO performs in such critical areas as pilot training and ensuring a strong supply of qualified airline pilots. Additionally, integrating advanced aviation technologies, enhancing aviation security, furthering efforts to reduce emissions, and promoting sustainability will be critical in supporting a robust aviation system founded on safety,” added Capt. Rooney.
We look forward to his collaboration with the 193 member states comprising ICAO on these and other issues affecting Air Safety and standards of compliance.
CAPA, the world’s largest pilot trade association, represents over 30,000 professional pilots at American Airlines (Allied Pilots Association), UPS Airlines (Independent Pilots Association), Atlas Air and Southern Air (Teamsters Local 2750), Republic Airways (Teamsters Local 357), ABX Air, Horizon Air, Cape Air, Omni Air, and Silver Airways (Teamsters Local 1224).
