(Washington, D.C. – September 11, 2021) Today marks the 20th anniversary of the September 11th terrorist attacks on New York City, Washington, DC, and the heroically thwarted attempt at Shanksville, Pennsylvania. As we honor the 9/11 heroes, victims, and their families and friends left behind, we would like to recognize once again the first responders and brave servicemen and women stationed around the world who protect us every day.
“Twenty years ago today, our nation unified like no other time in modern history, creating new Federal agencies and programs to ensure the safety of our cockpits and to protect the lives of our passengers and crews”, stated CAPA President Captain Larry Rooney. “We must continue to build upon these safeguards by further enhancing low cost, high yield programs such as the Federal Flight Deck Officers (FFDO) and by implementing additional protections for our nation’s cockpits through “secondary barriers” to unauthorized entry,” added Capt. Rooney.
“As the most efficient and arguably most effective layer of aviation security, we must ensure now, more than ever, that the FFDO program is fully supported to detect, deter and defend against those who would do us harm,” stated CAPA Director of Security Captain Bill Cason.
We will never forget those we lost in these senseless attacks, and may this anniversary serve as a reminder of this great nation’s strength, resilience, and commitment to the cause of freedom.
